The Harambee Stars have reignited national pride after clinching a crucial 1-0 victory over Morocco in their third group-stage match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The lone goal came in the 43rd minute from Tusker FC striker Ryan Ogam, who capitalised on a defensive lapse in the Moroccan penalty box to slot home the winner. The perfectly timed strike sent the home crowd into wild celebrations, just before the halftime whistle.

Head coach Benni McCarthy made several unexpected changes to the starting lineup, leaving out captain Aboud Omar and rising star Austin Odhiambo. The reshuffled squad displayed fresh energy, with the tactical switch paying off almost immediately.

Morocco began the match on the front foot, launching quick-fire attacks and testing Kenya’s defensive line. However, goalkeeper Bryne Omondi proved unbeatable, producing key saves to deny the visitors any early breakthrough.

As the first half wore on, Kenya grew into the game, matching Morocco’s intensity and pushing forward with more intent. Ogam’s decisive strike not only gave Kenya the lead but also boosted the team’s confidence heading into the second half.

In the final 45 minutes, Morocco pushed hard for an equaliser, but the Stars’ backline remained resolute, absorbing pressure and clearing danger with composure. McCarthy’s tactical discipline ensured Kenya protected their slender lead until the final whistle.

The win takes Kenya to four points from two matches, meaning a draw in their final group fixture will be enough to secure a spot in the knockout stages.

For Morocco, who arrived buoyed by a 2-0 win over Angola and a week’s rest, the defeat was a setback in their qualification hopes.

Kenyan fans took to social media to applaud the team’s fighting spirit and McCarthy’s bold decisions, with many now optimistic about a deep run in the tournament.

The Harambee Stars will now focus on their final group match, knowing that one more positive result could keep their CHAN dream alive.
