Michael Olunga from Lucky Summer to Football Stardom and Wealth

When Kenyans speak of football greatness, the name Michael Olunga easily tops the list. Known as “The Engineer” for his academic background in engineering, Olunga is not just a goal machine but also an inspiration to millions across Africa and beyond. From his humble beginnings in Lucky Summer, Nairobi, to commanding millions in salaries across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, Olunga’s journey is one of discipline, determination, and reward.

    Early Life and Education

Michael Olunga Ogada was born on 26th March 1994 in Nairobi, Kenya. He grew up in Lucky Summer, a neighborhood not particularly known for producing global stars. His parents, Alice and Joseph Ogada, instilled in him the values of education and hard work. Tragically, his father passed away when Olunga was only seven years old an event that deeply shaped his outlook on life.

He attended Baba Dogo Primary School and later Upper Hill Secondary School, where he successfully balanced football and academics. During holidays, he often visited his rural home in Othoro, Homa Bay County, where he played in local tournaments. His academic excellence earned him a place at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) to study Geospatial Engineering. Even as he pursued professional football, he never abandoned his studies a rare balance that earned him the nickname “The Engineer.”

    Football Journey in Kenya

Olunga’s professional career kicked off in 2012 with Liberty Sports Academy, where he scored an astonishing 32 goals in one season, immediately attracting attention.

    2013: Loaned to Tusker FC

    2014: Joined Thika United

2015: Signed by Gor Mahia, scoring 19 goals and helping the club to an unbeaten league title. He was also crowned Kenya Premier League MVP that season.

This breakthrough year paved the way for his move abroad.

    European Breakthrough

In 2016, Olunga signed for Djurgårdens IF in Sweden, where he quickly adapted to European football. A year later, he moved to Guizhou Zhicheng in China for a reported €4 million, making him one of Kenya’s most expensive transfers.

In 2017, he was loaned to Girona FC in Spain’s La Liga, where he made history by scoring a hat-trick in just 22 minutes against Las Palmas. He became the first Kenyan to score in La Liga, cementing his place among African football greats.

    Conquering Asia

Olunga’s next chapter unfolded in Japan with Kashiwa Reysol, where he became a fan favorite:

Helped the club win promotion from J2 League to J1 League.

Scored 28 goals in 32 matches in 2020, winning the Golden Boot.

Crowned J1 League MVP, becoming the first African player to do so.

His consistency soon attracted Middle Eastern clubs, leading to his move to Qatar.

    Michael Olunga in Qatar

In 2021, Olunga signed with Al-Duhail SC, continuing his goal-scoring dominance in both the Qatar Stars League and the AFC Champions League. By 2025, he had moved to Al-Arabi SC, remaining one of the most lethal strikers in the region.

His success in Qatar not only showcased his footballing talent but also elevated his financial status, making him one of the wealthiest Kenyan footballers.

    International Career with Harambee Stars

Olunga made his debut for the Kenya national team in 2015 and has since risen to captaincy. His goals and leadership have carried the Harambee Stars through tough AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.

    Caps: 67+

    Goals: 34+

Legacy: One of the highest goal scorers in Kenya’s history

    Wealth and Net Worth

Olunga’s career has been financially rewarding, placing him among Africa’s elite footballers.

Salary in Qatar: Estimated between $3~4 million annually in wages and bonuses.

Endorsements: Deals with top sports brands.

Net Worth (2025): Estimated at $5~7 million.

Investments: Active investor in Kenya, supporting community projects and businesses.

Unlike most Kenyan players, Olunga has achieved elite financial stability, standing among Africa’s best-paid stars.

    Personal Life

Away from the spotlight, Olunga maintains a private lifestyle. He has a long-term girlfriend named Grace, and remains deeply connected to his family. Known for his humility, he often gives back through charitable initiatives in Kenya.

    Legacy in the Making

Michael Olunga’s story is more than football it is a tale of resilience, education, and the power of dreams. From scoring goals on Nairobi’s dusty pitches to earning millions in Qatar, he has proven that Kenyan talent can shine anywhere in the world.

At only 31 years old, Olunga still has years left at the top level. Whether in Qatar, Europe, or back home inspiring the next generation, his legacy as Kenya’s greatest striker is already secure.

Michael Olunga is not just a footballer; he is a brand, a role model, and a beacon of hope for young Kenyan athletes dreaming beyond borders.
