Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has been warned to exercise extreme caution amid growing tensions surrounding the 2027 Deputy President (DP) succession race.
Councillor Njohi issued a stark caution against Wanga flying in helicopters, citing alleged threats linked to political jockeying within President William Ruto’s circle.

“Gladys Wanga is yet to understand who she is dealing with. She believes and lives the lie that she shall be picked as Kasongo’s deputy,” Njohi said, referring to President Ruto, whose Kikuyu name is often used in political circles.
Njohi’s warning comes against a backdrop of intense maneuvering for the coveted DP position.
He recalled how, a year ago, two Molima governors were separately approached by President Ruto during efforts to impeach then-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The President allegedly promised them the DP slot and provided funds to mobilize MPs from their counties to vote Gachagua out.
One governor reportedly went to extraordinary lengths, including purchasing goats and seeking blessings from opposition leader Raila Odinga.
A celebration and homecoming committee was even formed, and the governor had a suit ordered from Italy in anticipation of the swearing-in.
Njohi cautioned Wanga that she is not the only aspirant for the DP position.
According to him, the seat has also been promised to influential political figures such as Mbadi, Wandayi, Kaluma, Atandi, Mudavadi, and Waluke. This, he warned, makes her political ambitions a potential target.
“Wanga should tread carefully because the Deputy President seat is highly contested. Flying in helicopters may expose her to unnecessary risks,” Njohi stressed.
Political analysts note that the 2027 succession race is shaping up to be a high-stakes battle, with allegiances shifting rapidly and aspirants positioning themselves carefully.
Njohi’s warning underscores the intensity of the maneuvering, highlighting both the personal and political dangers that can accompany Kenya’s turbulent succession politics.
