Police Launch Investigations to Identify Looters During Nairobi CBD Protests

The recent protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) have taken a troubling turn, with incidents of looting reported across several business premises. In response, the Kenyan police have launched full-scale investigations to identify and apprehend individuals responsible for the destruction and theft witnessed during the demonstrations.
According to authorities, surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts are being used to track down the culprits. The looting occurred amid what were initially peaceful demonstrations, as a section of the youth and opportunistic individuals took advantage of the situation to break into shops, vandalize property, and steal goods.
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei stated that several suspects have already been arrested and are helping with investigations. “We have strong leads and will continue analyzing CCTV footage from affected buildings and city surveillance systems,” he said during a press briefing.
The protests, which were largely driven by public frustration over the rising cost of living and governance issues, turned chaotic when demonstrators clashed with police officers. Business owners in the CBD now count losses worth millions of shillings, with some saying they may not recover soon.
“We support the right to protest, but looting and destruction of private property is criminal. We will not rest until all perpetrators are brought to justice,” Bungei added.
Meanwhile, leaders and civil society groups have urged the public to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from engaging in acts that undermine public safety and economic stability. They also called on the police to uphold professionalism and avoid excessive force when managing crowds.
As investigations continue, Nairobi residents remain on edge, hoping for a swift return to order and justice for affected businesses.
