Former Deputy President Gachagua Charts Bold Path to 2027 with New Party as Mt Kenya Political Battle Lines Are Drawn

Political temperatures are rising in the Mt Kenya region as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua takes a bold step to reclaim his influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Through his newly launched Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua is positioning himself and his allies to challenge the region’s established political forces and revive the dominance once held by Jubilee and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
As of Tuesday, June 3, Gachagua’s campaign is in full swing, targeting current officeholders and rivals across Mt Kenya. His strategy is to build a loyal slate of candidates under the DCP banner, with political analysts noting this as a clear attempt to consolidate regional power and rejuvenate Mt Kenya’s political machinery with a fresh yet recognizable brand.
In public appearances, Gachagua has adopted a combative tone, accusing leaders aligned with President William Ruto of betrayal. He has urged voters to reject what he calls “traitors” at the ballot box. These pointed attacks have intensified political competition with established parties, including Jubilee, The Service Party (TSP), and regional outfits such as the Democratic Party and Chama Cha Kazi.
Jubilee remains a formidable force, sustained by strong grassroots support. The recent return of former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu to Jubilee has heightened tensions, with Wambugu openly criticizing Gachagua’s bid to dominate Mt Kenya politics. Meanwhile, TSP leader Mwangi Kiunjuri has cautioned against political monopolies, asserting that performance not party loyalty should determine leadership.
Behind the scenes, Gachagua is reportedly conducting strict vetting of potential candidates, aiming to replace what he perceives as disloyal MPs. There are also indications he may attempt to rebrand existing UDA offices under the DCP umbrella. Prominent figures such as Peter Mwathi, Wambui Nyutu, and Wahome Thuku have already been mentioned as possible contenders for key seats.
Amid growing speculation, Kirinyaga Senator James Murango has dismissed claims of prearranged endorsements, assuring the public that all aspirants will face a fair and open nomination process.
As political factions across Mt Kenya draw their battle lines, the race for 2027 is heating up. What unfolds in the coming months could dramatically reshape the region’s political landscape and determine who holds sway in the next chapter of Kenya’s leadership.
