Dogo Khan entered was born in 1950 in the town of Bonyunyu, Nyamira County. His 1980 establishment of Shabana FC

In the middle of the 1980s, he was a key cog in Shabana FC’s run to glory. Shabana FC’s former chairman, Nyandoro Kambi, died in 2022. In 2023, Shabana won the NSL championship and advanced to the FKF-Premier League.

In 1980, industrialist Dogo Khan established Shabana FC. In 1985, the club earned promotion to the premier division and finished 10th that year. They moved up to 8th place that year (1986).

Dogo Khan was born in the year 1950 in the small Kenyan town of Bonyunyu, Nyamira County. He started the Kisii-based business and sports team Shabana FC.

In the 1970s, Khan opened Shabana Hardware, where he specialized in selling hardware and construction supplies.

He ran a prosperous business and donated to Shabana FC.

In what year did Shabana FC begin play?

After its establishment in 1980, Shabana FC swiftly rose to prominence as one of Kenya’s most renowned football teams.

During its heyday in the mid-1980s, the club was the national representative for Kenya in the African Cup of Champions Clubs and placed third in the Kenyan Premier League.

Khan was well-known for his philanthropic contributions to Shabana FC, of which he was a fervent fan.

He was instrumental to the team’s success by advising the management and coaching staff.

Iterio secondary school played a crucial role in Shabana FC’s rise to prominence.

When it came to developing future Shabana stars, Iterio was the place to go. During this time, Henry Motego, Henry Nyandoro, and Mike Okoth Origi were arguably Shabana’s three most well-known players.

While still at Iterio, all three of these players began playing for Shabana.

Motego, Okoth, and a number of other Shabana players helped lead the Iterio squad to the 1987 national schools championships.

They triumphed over the highly regarded Kakamega High School, which had previously won the National Schools Championship 5 times in the previous 7 years.

Shabana’s 1987 campaign was her most successful to date. They shocked the competition by coming in third in the league, behind surprise winners Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

In the Africa Champions Cup, they competed for Kenya but were eliminated by the Kabwe Warriors of Zambia in the first round.

The key to Shabana’s success in the league was the team’s play at home, specifically at the Gusii stadium.

The environment was hostile to the visiting team. They had some of the most demanding and fervent fans in the country, to the point where they threatened violence against Shabana players if they lost and visiting players if they won.

The team was unable to keep any of its star players. Simiyu was no longer with AFC. In 1988, Motego and Okoth became members of Tusker.

The year 2000 marked Shabana’s final attempt at continental football, when they faced Hay al Arab of Sudan in the CAF cup. They were eliminated in the first round once again, this time by a score of 0-2 overall.

After 21 years in the first division, the club’s luck began to turn when they were demoted in 2006. The team collapsed after its members declined to play in lesser divisions. The club was revitalized and began its comeback in 2008.

A team like Shabana, with an established and loyal fan base, would be a great asset to the Kenya Premier League. Shabana is arguably the only team outside of Gor Mahia and AFC that could consistently bring in crowds.

Individuals’ personal objectives and conflicts of interest have been a major roadblock for Shabana. It will take solid leadership, hard work, devotion, and selflessness from fans, players, and officials for Shabana to return to the top level.

Shabana might draw encouragement from the fact that both Gor Mahia and AFC appeared to be doomed as recently as 2006, when AFC was playing in the lower leagues and the former was always fighting relegation.

The club’s leader, Nyandoro Kambi, died in 2022. His death was a devastating blow to the Shabana community, as he was a loyal and enthusiastic fan of the team.

Shabana FC, despite its recent difficulties, is still a well-liked and historically significant club. It will be exciting to see where Shabana goes from here. The club has the potential to return to the top division.

The 8th of July, 2023, saw Shabana FC’s return to the FKF Premier League after they had been absent since 2006. This was thanks to their victory in the National Super League (NSL).

At the end of the season, they had 73 points, which was 4 more than the second-place team, Murang’a SealFC.
