The family of the slain self-confessed serial children killer Masten
Wanjala is reportedly reading malice in the circumstances that led to his
death. Wanjala, who confessed to killing more than ten children, was
lynched in the evening of Thursday, October 14, a day after escaping
from custody.
A source related to the family told Nation that their son’s escape from
Jogoo Road Police Station in Nairobi raised eyebrows. The source said
the family suspect the police had a hand in Wanjala’s killing as there is
no way he ‘easily’ escaped from custody despite initially being heavily
guarded.“We suspect the killing was extra-judicial considering that the
last time he was here is about two months ago under heavy police
escort, casting doubt on how he managed to escape,” the source said.
Consequently, the source disclosed the family was contemplating suing
the government over the death of their 20-year-old son.
He said even though their son had wronged many families, it was
prudent that the police arraigned him in court and have him charged for
the families of the victims to get justice. After Wanjala was lynched,
serious questions were raised about how he managed to travel over
400km from Nairobi where he escaped to Bungoma despite being on
police radar.
Others questioned how police failed to secure him properly considering
the seriousness of his crimes as he was sharing cells with petty
offenders including those arrested without face masks. At the same time,
Wanjala’s family disowned him, vowing not to lay him to rest. The family
of Mzee Robert Watila, Wanjala’s father, said they were not ready to bury
him for fear of contracting a curse. Mukhweya’s Assistant Chief Abiud
Musungu said Wanjala’s family had turned down calls from authorities to
take a DNA test and bury their son. The chief said the government might
be forced to bury the suspected killer should his family maintain their
stand. Wanjala’s neighbour, Davis Wafula, said as a clan, they did not
want to be associated with him since he had ashamed them.
