How is the current Coronavirus pandemic relevant to Malthus’s Theory of population that warned of Future difficulties.
In 1798 Malthus argued that the power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man,that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race.
In his controversial essay he argued that population must always remain within the resources limit.
To achieve this,there exisia number of forces that hold population in check to resource limit.
The first is called the preventive check i.e birth control that can be carried out by human beings themselves to make sure population does not surpass food supply.
If human beings fail to achieve this balance,then nature itself will step in to achieve balance by permitting higher death rates.
This is called positive check. It involves pandemics and plagues descending on the human race and wiping them out fomerociously in their thousands and tens of thousands. The pandemics will keep on appearing regularly to achieve the balance.
Should success be still incomplete, gigantic inevitable famine stalks in the rear, and with one mighty blow levels the population with the food of the world.
