Edwin Sifuna, Nairobi Senator, has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which has stirred public anxiety over fears of a possible extension of presidential term limits.

Speaking during a recent interview on Citizen Radio, Sifuna dismissed the bill as “miswada ya ujinga sana,” asserting that it contains elements that threaten Kenya’s democratic integrity.

While the Senate officially clarified on September 9 that the bill does not propose changes to presidential, gubernatorial, or parliamentary term limits, Sifuna’s remarks reflect the deep mistrust many Kenyans feel toward the political process.

He assured citizens that there are senators who will not allow “nonsense” to pass through Parliament, vowing to stand with the people in defense of the Constitution.

Sifuna went further, invoking the recent public uprising against the controversial Finance Bill, where thousands of Kenyans stormed Parliament grounds in protest. “Let Kenyans not fear,” he said.

“You have already taken back your power. You are even more powerful than the politicians.” His words struck a chord with many, especially youth-led movements that have been at the forefront of civic action.

The senator’s comments were echoed by other lawmakers, including Senator Cherargei, who also expressed concern over the bill’s implications.

Their stance signals a growing resistance within the Senate, even as civil society groups and online communities continue to demand transparency and accountability.
