Tanzania Bound Plane Recalled to JKIA Over Suspected Chemical Leak
A flight from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Tanzania was abruptly recalled after crew members detected an unusual odor onboard, suspected of a hazardous chemical.
The plane, operated by a regional carrier, had just taken off when the crew reported the fumes and decided to return to Nairobi as a precaution.
Emergency teams, including fire engines, ambulances, and a HAZMAT unit, were on standby as the plane landed safely. Passengers were swiftly evacuated without injury.
Preliminary investigations suggest the source of the fumes was a chemical leak from cargo in the aircraft’s hold. “Safety is our highest priority,” said Henry Ogoye, Managing Director of Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), confirming that investigations are underway to determine the substance and improve cargo screening.
“This incident highlights the importance of swift action in aviation emergencies,” said Dr. Angela Kilonzo, an aviation risk manager.
