The tragic accident involving marathon runner Kevin Kiptum has left the nation mourning the loss of a promising athlete and his coach.

While preparations are underway for the government’s ceremony to honor Kiptum’s memory, new details emerging shed light on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The incident occurred on Sunday, February 11, claiming the lives of Kiptum and his coach, with only one survivor—a woman identified as Sharon Kosgei, who sustained injuries in the crash.

Kosgei received prompt medical attention and was treated for her injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital on Monday, February 12.

After recuperating, she was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, February 14, before providing a statement to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Iten, contributing crucial information to the ongoing investigation.

DCI officials reported progress in the case on Thursday, February 15, noting that statements from Sharon Kosgei had been obtained.

They assured the public that the investigation was still ongoing and promised transparency in sharing the findings once concluded.

According to Kosgei’s account, she witnessed the vehicle veering off the road and attempted to alert Kiptum, but the accident occurred nonetheless.

Kiptum’s widow, Asenath Cheruto, recalled their last conversation before the tragedy struck.

They spoke at 4 am on Saturday, February 11, as Kiptum prepared to head for training at the Fluorspar camp.

Despite staying in touch throughout the weekend, Kiptum mentioned feeling tired from his training sessions and expressed disappointment over canceling their plans for Sunday due to a persistent headache.

Cheruto was devastated upon receiving the heartbreaking news late on Sunday night.

The accident has left the athletics community in shock and mourning, as Kiptum’s promising career and potential were cut short tragically.

As investigations continue to unravel the circumstances leading to the accident, the nation remains eager for answers and justice for the lives lost.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety measures.

It prompts reflection on the need for enhanced precautions to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future, especially among athletes who often travel extensively for training and competitions.

As the nation pays tribute to Kevin Kiptum and his coach, the memory of their contributions to Kenyan athletics will endure, serving as inspiration for future generations of athletes.
