‘It will be good to see Eriksen’

Man City v Brentford (19:45 GMT)

It could be a while before new Brentford signing Christian Eriksen makes his debut for the Bees, but Pep Guardiola is delighted the former Tottenham attacking midfielder is back on course to play again.

Eriksen, 29, suffered cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 in June 2021 and was subsequently fitted with an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) – a type of pacemaker.

He joined Brentford – who play Manchester City tonight (19:45 GMT) – on a six-month contract on transfer deadline day after his release by Inter Milan.

“It is great news,” said City boss Guardiola. “Fortunately he can come back, good news for him, his family and Brentford. It will be good to see him.”

We need to show hunger and fight’

    Leicester City

Rodgers says facing Liverpool on Thursday is the “toughest game you can have” after last Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

“What must never be broken is your spirit because you always get the chance to go again,” he adds. “It’s the challenge you live for, to show that resilience.”

On his former club Liverpool, Rodgers adds: “It’s the toughest game you could have in the wake of such a result.

“We showed great spirit the last time we played [Liverpool], so I know that is there. We need to show hunger and fight.”

Brendan Rodgers adds: “When I came in we were 13th in the table. They have finished in Europe and won an FA Cup. That cannot be the pinnacle. We have to keep striving. You can’t be timid.”

The Leicester boss says a “healthy shake-up” is required.

“The performance [at the weekend] reaffirms what we knew anyway. We’re talking about a healthy shake-up. Nine of the 11 were here on the first day I arrived. And now it’s three years later.

“You need to evolve the squad. It’s a healthy shake-up that is required. We must always have a hunger to develop, and sometimes that means bringing in players who have that.

“Competition is a great coach. It’s not on the back of the weekend, it’s something that we need to happen.”
