Amid ongoing heavy rains posing a threat to many in Kenya, the government has issued warnings urging citizens, especially those in flood-prone areas, to relocate promptly to avoid further tragedies.

Throughout this crisis, the Red Cross team has been instrumental in rescuing victims and providing assistance.

However, a section of Kenyans expressed outrage after a photo surfaced on social media depicting two individuals wearing Red Cross attire posing for a selfie instead of aiding victims behind them.

The image sparked widespread condemnation, with many criticizing the perceived insensitivity of the workers to the dire situation.

Commentators on social media voiced their disapproval of the workers’ behavior, describing it as unacceptable given the gravity of the circumstances.

The incident ignited a debate about the responsibilities of humanitarian workers and the importance of maintaining professionalism and empathy in crisis situations.

Following the public backlash, one of the individuals in the photo, identified as Anita, issued an apology to Kenyans, expressing deep regret for her actions and acknowledging the insensitivity of sharing a selfie during a rescue mission.

The controversy serves as a reminder of the ethical obligations of humanitarian workers and the need for sensitivity and accountability in their conduct, particularly when dealing with emergencies and vulnerable populations.

As the Red Cross continues its vital work in assisting those affected by the ongoing rains and floods, the incident underscores the importance of upholding the organization’s values of compassion, integrity, and respect for human dignity.
