Kisumu Celebrates Sporting Heroes: Agai Secondary and Sigoti Complex Girls Set for National Ball Games Glory

Kisumu County has once again proven itself a fertile ground for talent, determination, and sporting excellence. This week, the Deputy Governor of Kisumu, Dr. Mathew Owili, played host to two of the region’s brightest stars in school sports Agai Secondary School and Sigoti Complex Girls School ahead of their highly anticipated journey to Kakamega for the National Ball Games Championships.

These schools are not only regional champions but also shining beacons of the sporting spirit that Nyakach Constituency is fast becoming known for. Their recent triumphs in the regional championships, held right in the heart of Kisumu City, have inspired hope and pride across the county. Both Agai and Sigoti hail from Nyakach Constituency, ably represented in Parliament by Hon. Aduma Owuor, a steadfast supporter of youth development and education.

Agai Secondary School has made waves with their electrifying performances in football, overcoming tough opposition to emerge regional champions. Their cohesive teamwork, sharp tactics, and resilience on the pitch have earned them a spot at the nationals and admiration from across the county.

Sigoti Complex Girls School has become a force to reckon with in rugby, showcasing unmatched athleticism and skill. Their rise in a sport traditionally dominated by larger schools is a testament to the school’s dedication to excellence, discipline, and the empowerment of young women through sports.

As the teams prepare to head to Kakamega, the entire Kisumu community rallies behind them, filled with optimism that these young athletes will return home crowned national champions.

In a ceremony held at the Deputy Governor’s office, Dr. Mathew Owili warmly welcomed the students, coaches, and officials from both schools. The event was more than just a courtesy call; it was a moment of celebration and a show of the county’s unwavering support for sports development.

The Deputy Governor, speaking on behalf of H.E. Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, conveyed a message of goodwill and encouragement to the students. He praised their exceptional achievements and expressed confidence in their ability to bring home national titles. To bolster their efforts, the county government extended logistical support to both teams, ensuring they are well-equipped and comfortable during the national games. This support included the donation of sports kits to the teams and their technical benches a significant boost as they embark on this crucial leg of their journey.

Joining Dr. Owili was CEC for Sports Beatrice Odongo, who emphasized the county’s ongoing investment in nurturing talent at the grassroots level. She highlighted the importance of sports in character building, promoting discipline, and opening up future opportunities for the youth.

The event also saw the presence of other key leaders, including Deputy Majority Whip Hon. Lumumba Owade, who congratulated the students and assured them of continued support from the county assembly. The heads of the two schools Mr. Gordon Akoko of Agai Secondary and Ms. Rose Mandungu of Sigoti Complex Girls were also present and lauded for their role in guiding and motivating the young athletes.

Other education and sports officials, school board representatives, and local leaders were also in attendance, making it clear that this was a community effort, united behind the success of these schools.

As Agai and Sigoti head to Kakamega next week, they do so carrying the hopes and dreams of Kisumu County. The journey ahead is tough, but these teams have already proven that they have the heart, skill, and dedication to rise to the challenge.

Their victories so far have sparked a renewed interest in school sports within the region. More importantly, they have shown that with the right support, Kisumu’s youth can compete and win at the national level.

The entire county stands with them. We wish both teams the very best as they chase national glory. May they bring the titles home and etch their names in the annals of Kenyan school sports history.
