Mukoma Wa Ngungi has shed light on the distressing experiences her late mother endured at the hands of her father, Ngungi Wa Thiong’o, a prominent novelist in Kenya.

Mukoma disclosed that her father subjected her biological mother to physical abuse, recounting memories of her mother seeking refuge at her grandmother’s home to escape the assaults.

Sharing her account on her X platform, Mukoma Wa Ngungi bravely spoke out against the alleged abuse, highlighting the silence surrounding her mother’s identity amidst the turmoil.

She expressed her pain and frustration, stating, “My father Ngugi Wa Thiong’o physically abused my late mother – he would beat her up. Some of my earliest memories are me going to visit her at my grandmother’s where she would seek refuge. But with that said it is the silencing of who she was that gets me. Ok- I have said it.”

The revelation sparked a flurry of reactions across Kenya, with opinions diverging on cultural norms and personal accountability.

While some individuals, like Peter Cege, attempted to contextualize the abuse within the framework of traditional Kikuyu culture, others, like Ndirangu, firmly denounced such practices as archaic and unacceptable in modern society.

However, amidst the debate, Mukoma Wa Ngungi received support and empathy from a segment of Kenyans who applauded her courage in speaking out.

One commenter expressed gratitude for Mukoma’s honesty, acknowledging the complexity of addressing the flaws of loved ones without diminishing their entire legacy.

Others urged Mukoma to find it in her heart to forgive her father, recognizing the generational shift in societal norms and the imperative to strive for progress.
