Embakasi Gas Plant explosion that claimed three lives and left 300 others injured, survivors are bravely sharing their harrowing experiences.

One such survivor, Mr. Kioko, recounts the night that altered his life forever, revealing the critical choices that ultimately spared him from the deadly flames.

Kioko, currently recovering at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi, vividly described how an ambulance became their lifeline, rescuing him and his family from the blazing inferno.

Amidst the chaos, Kioko’s quick thinking and a stroke of luck played a pivotal role in ensuring his survival.

During the frantic escape from the encroaching flames, Kioko spotted a lifeline—a pool of running sewage.

Without hesitation, he immersed himself in the repulsive yet life-saving pool, shielding himself from the advancing fire.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Kioko poignantly remarked, “Were it not for diving into a filthy pool of raw sewage which I spotted as I fled for my life and completely immersed myself in there, I would have burnt to death.”

The father of two went on to share the emotional details of how he safeguarded his family during the firestorm.

Spotting the explosion’s fiery threat heading towards their home, Kioko swiftly directed his wife to take their children to a secure hiding spot.

Despite sustaining serious injuries, Kioko finds solace in the fact that his wife and children emerged unscathed.

As survivors like Kioko grapple with physical and emotional wounds, public outrage has surged against NEMA (National Environment Management Authority) and EPRA (Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority) officials.

The gas plant’s proximity to residential areas has sparked widespread condemnation, especially in light of reports indicating that the court had declared the plant’s establishment illegal.

Questions loom over why the gas plant’s owner proceeded with operations despite a court ruling against its setup.

Kenyans are demanding accountability, urging authorities to address the regulatory lapses that allowed such a hazardous facility to operate near people’s homes.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences when safety regulations are overlooked.

As investigations unfold, the focus shifts not only to providing support for the victims but also to addressing systemic failures that put lives at risk.

The voices of survivors, like Mr. Kioko, amplify the urgency for stricter adherence to safety measures and accountability within regulatory bodies, ensuring that such catastrophic events are prevented in the future.
