D’Angelo Spain, a young African American child from Bowie, Maryland, has made a name for himself as a professional pool player despite only being 11 years old. Now he travels the country competing in billiards competitions, and he’s the best junior player in the world in the under-13 age group at the Junior International Championship (JIC).

His folks say it all started when they went to buy a karaoke machine and D’Angelo requested if the family could instead get a pool table. After some back-and-forth about where the pool table would go, they compromised and made the purchase, with the understanding that some furniture would need to be rearranged to accommodate it.

D’Angelo, an A student whose father calls him “Jawz,” told Fox5DC that he spends five to six hours a day shooting pool. Also, his younger sister Franki, only nine years old, is gaining a name for herself as a prodigiously skilled pool player. Because of how much they love playing billiards, they put in a lot of time in the pool room honing their skills.

D’Angelo’s next major tournament will be the International Open in Norfolk, Virginia, in November 2022. However, such high-level competition comes with hefty costs.

To help defray the costs of transportation, hotel, and entry fees to the event, the family has set up a GoFundMe campaign.

D’Angelo jokes that beating his father at anything is his proudest achievement. D’Angelo affirms that this man possesses superior talent. And yet, that’s just not good enough.
