Yesterday, on his first full day in office, President William Ruto made a decision that was not well received by many people in Nyeri county.

President William Ruto has high expectations from Kenyans because of his campaign promises. The “chief hustler,” as he liked to call himself during campaigns, pledged to improve the economy and the standard of living for all Kenyans.

In his first speech as president, he acknowledged that the fuel subsidy was unsustainable and warned that his administration would have to assess next steps in the absence of the subsidy. Due to the enormous sums of money that have already been invested in the effort, Ruto has stated that he is seriously contemplating abandoning it.

However, some Nyeri residents apparently opposed his comments because they disagreed with the decision to end the fuel subsidy program. Numerous citizens have told the People Daily that the William Ruto administration is breaking the promises they made during the election.

As inhabitants see it, scrapping the subsidy will have a knock-on effect on the cost of living, since fuel is the primary input in most manufacturing processes.

“Nyeri locals have voiced their disappointment at the recent fuel price hike, saying they had hoped the Kenya Kwanza government’s campaign promises of lower fuel costs would be kept.” A local named Muriuki mwangi observed.

“It’s a shame the bottom-up economic model’s promise has turned out to be price increases. I’m worried because I can’t figure out how to get to work, and if I do, I won’t know how to get back home “that’s what the man from Nyeri mentioned.
