Nicky Gitonga, a former citizen TV reporter, was recently hired by the Kwale County Government as its Director of Communications and spokeswoman.

The journalist’s last day at Citizen TV will be October 13, 2022, and he will start his new job the following day.

Gitonga confirmed the position, mentioning the rigorous screening process he went through to get there. According to him, the role was abandoned after the Salim Mvurya administration was voted out of office.

He seemed optimistic that his new position would provide him a chance to help the people of the county.

“That is correct. A director of communications is hired on a five-year contract basis. Now that a new county administration has taken office, there will be new officials in charge. I happened across the opening and applied; by God’s help, I was successful “It was his words that were made clear.

The journalist will be the county’s primary spokesperson and media contact, in addition to managing and directing all internal and external communications. This includes supervising public relations staff, developing communication strategies, and managing budgets.

After working for Citizen TV in Kwale County for eight years, Gitonga has given notice to the Royal Media Services and will commence his new position in one month (RMS).

Richard Chacha, a former journalist at NTV, was also the Director of Communications for the city of Mombasa under the administration of outgoing governor Hassan Joho.

Gitonga joins the ranks of other reporters who have recently left the media industry to work for the county government.

Franklin Wambugu, a reporter for K24 TV, will be Kiambu’s new chief officer in charge of communications and public relations beginning in August 2020.

Both Ebru TV’s Victor Wetende and KTN’s Carol Nderi have recently departed their respective stations to take on government roles in neighboring counties.
