Following a nationwide outcry on Friday, March 4, when boda boda operators were caught on camera abusing a female motorist in Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday ordered a national crackdown on the boda boda business.

The president ordered a crackdown on renegade boda boda riders and urged lawmakers against politicizing the issue while speaking at the Kenya School of Government, where he led the country in marking International Women’s Day.

The Head of State, while condemning the event on Friday, stated that the operators not only assaulted the lady driver, but also sullied her character, something his administration will not tolerate.

“A boda boda is not a licence to strip a woman. There should never be a repeat of what happened on Friday. This is a blight on the whole Kenyan society,” President Uhuru said

Despite his support for the boda boda business, President Uhuru stated that he will not sit by and watch individuals in the industry violate a woman’s dignity. As a result of the act, the president ordered that all boda bodas in the country be re-registered.

We want to support the bodaboda business but it is not a license for a boda boda to do drive-by shootings and most definitely it is not a license for you to strip and remove dignity from our women. We will re-register all bodabodas. Those who want to politicize this let them go ahead and do that,” he said.

All of the president’s remarks praised the boda boda operators for their excellent acts. He claimed that just because the operators had made news for positive reasons did not give them permission to abuse a woman.

We have heard of many heroic stories of young men who have come to the rescue of people and women in distress but that is not a licence for you to remove dignity from our women,” he said
