Elders from the Kikuyu community have finally weighed in on the latest political moves made by President Uhuru Kenyatta in relation to the 2022 succession politics.
The elders who spoke on Sunday warned that the division witnessed among the Mount Kenya politicians as polls approaches may be detrimental to the region’s future. Their national chairperson stated that they will ensure that the community speaks in one voice and follow one path
“What is important to us is bringing peace in our community because wherever there are elders things never go wrong. Just as Mzee Kibaki used to say, there should be no hurry in doing things,” said Elder Gathuma.
They further reiterated that they will respect the decisions made by President Uhuru Kenyatta because he is one of the Kikuyu elders and also the region’s kingpin.
“We are strongly behind the president who is also among the elders. Whatever he said yesterday were in line with our wishes as a community,” said yet another elder.
The elders’ statement comes just a day after President Kenyatta reaffirmed his commitment to ensure that his former political nemesis Raila Odinga rises to power. It may also have resulted from the Sagana declaration a few days ago by President Uhuru.
Kikuyu Council of Elders has always played a major role in shaping how the Mount Kenya region votes during the general elections.
Notably, they have always rallied behind the region’s kingpin however this time round the political dynamics were not in favour of them because the community is heading to a general election with a kingpin who is retiring from politics.
