President William Ruto Meets Former President Uhuru Kenyatta to Review Progress in the DRC Peace Process

President Ruto hosts former president Uhuru Kenyatta at the Statehouse Nairobi

President William Ruto on Thursday hosted former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other key facilitators of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Peace Process at State House, Nairobi, in a high-level meeting aimed at evaluating ongoing peace efforts and charting a way forward.

The meeting, which brought together regional leaders, diplomats, and peace envoys, reflects Kenya’s continued commitment to supporting peace, stability, and reconciliation in the Great Lakes region, particularly in the DRC where armed conflict and political instability have plagued parts of the country for decades.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was appointed as Kenya’s Special Envoy for Peace in the Great Lakes Region, has played a pivotal role in mediating between warring factions and facilitating dialogue through the East African Community (EAC)-led Nairobi Process.

In his remarks, President Ruto emphasized Kenya’s unwavering dedication to regional peace-building, noting that “the prosperity of Africa depends on stability, security, and strong cooperation between nations.” He also commended the progress made so far in de-escalating tensions in eastern DRC and acknowledged the tireless efforts of President Kenyatta and other stakeholders in pushing for inclusive political solutions.

President Ruto added that Kenya remains ready to offer both diplomatic and logistical support for the peace initiatives, including the deployment of peacekeeping personnel under the EAC Regional Force and continued engagement with international partners.

Former President Kenyatta, on his part, briefed the meeting on the current status of negotiations, the challenges still facing the peace process, and the need for sustained pressure on all parties to honor ceasefire agreements and participate in national dialogue efforts.

Also in attendance were representatives from the African Union, United Nations, and EAC Secretariat, along with envoys from Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi countries that have a strategic stake in the stabilization of the DRC.

    Kenya’s Role in Regional Diplomacy

Kenya’s involvement in the DRC peace efforts has been widely praised, with Nairobi emerging as a key diplomatic hub in the push for conflict resolution across Africa. Beyond the DRC, Kenya has also mediated in peace processes in South Sudan, Somalia, and Sudan, underscoring its growing influence as a peace broker in the region.

As the DRC prepares for critical political transitions and post-conflict recovery, Kenya’s role remains crucial in ensuring that dialogue prevails over division, and that the Congolese people are given a chance to rebuild in peace.

    Looking Ahead

The meeting concluded with a renewed call for international solidarity, increased humanitarian support for affected communities, and sustained engagement with local leaders to ensure a lasting and inclusive peace in the DRC.

With Kenya at the forefront of these efforts, all eyes now turn to the implementation of resolutions from the Nairobi Process and how regional players can support the DRC in overcoming years of conflict and instability.
