Elizabeth Wanjiru, best known by her on-screen name Charity Mwamba from the popular Citizen TV drama Mother-in-Law, remains one of Kenya’s most iconic actresses. Since her debut in 2008, Wanjiru has consistently lit up the screen, portraying the no-nonsense, drama-filled mother-in-law that fans love to hate.

But beyond the screen, Elizabeth has lived a life full of rich history, education, and influence. Born on July 12, 1945, to Apollos Mwangi and Zipporah, she attended the prestigious Alliance Girls High School before pursuing literature at Makerere University, where she graduated in 1968.

It was during her time at Makerere that she met her husband, Shem Bagaine, a Ugandan politician who would later rise to prominence. The two bonded over a shared love for drama and even joined the university’s Drama Club together. Their passion eventually led them to the University of Nairobi, where they helped form the institution’s Drama Club. Their love blossomed, leading to marriage and a family based in Nairobi.

Unfortunately, the couple became estranged in 1981, after 13 years of marriage, though Elizabeth rarely speaks publicly about the separation.

Before her acting fame, Wanjiru was also a dedicated teacher, something that perhaps helped shape her stern character in Mother-in-Law. Despite the personal ups and downs, her resilience and love for the arts have made her a respected figure in Kenya’s entertainment industry.
