Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has been admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, raising concerns about his health and well-being.

Chebukati, who served as the head of the electoral commission from January 2017 to November 2022, played a significant role in Kenya’s political landscape.

His tenure was marked by overseeing various elections, including the contentious 2017 general elections.

Sources close to Chebukati’s family revealed that he was admitted to the hospital earlier this week for undisclosed health reasons.

However, the severity of his condition remains undisclosed, and there has been no official statement from his family or the hospital regarding his illness.

The news of Chebukati’s hospitalization has triggered an outpouring of concern and well-wishes from Kenyans, who have taken to social media to express their support and prayers for his speedy recovery.

Politicians from across the political spectrum have also sent messages of solidarity to the former IEBC chair.

Chebukati’s tenure at the helm of the electoral commission received both praise and criticism.

While he was commended for overseeing a largely peaceful and credible rerun of the presidential election in October 2017, he also faced allegations of mismanagement and incompetence.

Throughout his time in office, Chebukati advocated for electoral reforms aimed at enhancing the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.

However, his efforts often encountered challenges due to political interference and legal disputes.

As news of Chebukati’s hospitalization unfolds, Kenyans remain hopeful for his swift recovery and return to good health.

Meanwhile, the country awaits further updates on his condition and sends him well wishes during this challenging time.
