In a lavish ceremony at Kangari village, Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi, 37, made headlines by paying an astounding Ksh 300 million as dowry for Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty Maina.
The extravagant event, graced by President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, left many in shock due to the unprecedented and exorbitant dowry amount.
Deputy President Gachagua, who served as the elder on Wamumbi’s side, expressed disbelief at the staggering dowry, stating that despite not being impoverished, the burden felt overwhelming.

An informant later revealed that elders from Maina’s side justified the high cost, citing her beauty, education, and political position with a lucrative salary as contributing factors.
Despite the apparent strain, the lavish dowry payment ceremony resulted in the transfer of considerable property to Wamumbi, with Maina now balancing leadership duties in Murang’a during the day and marital responsibilities in Nyeri in the evening.
Gachagua proposed that the cost of dowry should be rewarded for children born within the marriage.

The informant disclosed a three-phase breakdown of the dowry, with Ksh 100 million allocated for education, studies, and status improvement for each phase.
As concerns were raised by elders, a reminder that embarrassing the waiting President, who was present to bless the occasion, was not an option.
Over 20 politicians in attendance had to contribute to meet the considerable expenses incurred during the event.

Betty Maina, a notable political figure, attended Kangari Upcountry Primary School and later graduated with a degree in development affairs from Mount Kenya University.
Known as ‘Betty e Sawa,’ she is recognized for her political contributions, including composing a song in support of William Ruto’s presidential candidacy in 2022.
Before tying the knot, both Maina and Wamumbi had previous relationships, each bringing two children into their union. Now, with the additional children directed by Gachagua, they are raising a family of four.

The extravagant dowry event has sparked public outrage, raising pertinent questions about traditional practices and the valuation of marital unions in contemporary society.
The astounding dowry payment has ignited a broader conversation about the role of tradition in modern society and whether such extravagant displays align with evolving values.
Public sentiment is divided, with some questioning the justification for such exorbitant amounts, while others argue that cultural practices should be respected and upheld.

As discussions unfold, the Mathira MP’s dowry payment continues to stir controversy, prompting a reflection on the intersection of tradition, wealth, and societal expectations in the context of high-profile marriages.
