The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has trained almost 2, 000 ” tax ambassadors, ” students selected from several Kenyan colleges, to help disseminate tax information to the general public.
Using a program called ” adopt a county, ” the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has established tax societies at universities around the country, according to Nicholas Kinoti, the agency’ s Northern Regional Coordinator.
During the launch of a tax society at Chuka University on Wednesday, Kinoti announced that the program had groomed over 2, 000 ambassadors drawn from 30 tax societies established at different universities. The speech was read on Kinoti’ s behalf by the Northern Region Marketing Coordinator Alfred Wachira.
He went on to explain that the organization would assist the public by providing basic services like tax return filing and general tax education to the communities in the vicinity of the institution.
” As a school, we always pay our taxes on time, and we believe that teaching our students to do the same will help them much when they enter the workforce. Dr. Opiayo believes it is a good idea that KRA has chosen Chuka University to establish a tax society and to act as a representative for other universities in the region.
Dr. Benjamin Kanga, the university’ s dean of students, echoed these sentiments, praising KRA’ s work in assisting the university in establishing a tax society and enlightening the student body about the benefits of doing the right thing come tax time.
Dr. Kanga explained that the Tax Society would train students to ” become tax ambassadors” to their families back home by teaching them the importance of paying taxes. Personally I feel that is a positive step to enable growth and expansion of the firm in Kenya.
