Airtel Money Now Supports Free Google Play Payments in Kenya

New partnership with Google offers zero-fee app purchases via Airtel Money

In a move set to enhance digital payments in Kenya, Airtel Money has announced a partnership with Google that enables users to purchase Google Play content directly using their mobile wallets—with no transaction fees.

The new integration adds a convenient payment option for Kenyans looking to access premium apps, games, books, music, and movies through Google Play, Google’s official digital distribution platform for Android.

    Airtel and Google: Expanding Access

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Money Managing Director Anne Kinuthia-Otieno praised Kenya’s evolving digital economy and highlighted the importance of expanding payment flexibility.

“This partnership empowers our users by giving them choice and convenience, allowing them to pay for digital content seamlessly from their Airtel Money wallets,” she said.

The move aligns with Airtel’s ongoing effort to grow its mobile money ecosystem while catering to Kenya’s tech-savvy, app-hungry population.

Why This Matters for Kenyan Users

As in-app purchases continue to surge—fueled largely by streaming and social media platforms like TikTok, which reported 15.1 million adult users in Kenya early in 2025—the need for accessible, cost-effective payment methods has never been greater.

With zero transaction fees for Google Play purchases, Airtel Money’s offer is particularly appealing to budget-conscious consumers seeking entertainment or productivity tools without incurring hidden charges.

    Rapid Growth of Airtel Money

Airtel Money’s user base and market share have expanded rapidly over the past year. By September 2024, its market share had climbed from 2.9% to 7.6%, driven by a combination of free transfers and aggressive onboarding campaigns.

This growth has mirrored a broader shift in Kenya’s mobile money landscape, with Airtel positioning itself as a serious contender in a market long dominated by rivals like M-Pesa.

Additionally, Airtel Kenya added 1.8 million new SIM subscribers in the past year, increasing its overall market share to 29.5%.

    Conclusion

With this latest development, Airtel Money is doubling down on value by enabling free and direct Google Play purchases—a win for users seeking affordability and convenience in their digital lives.

As more Kenyans engage in online transactions and in-app experiences, seamless integrations like this one are helping shape a more inclusive digital economy.
