Man Who Stole from Same Shop 27 Times in Six Months Bags Jail Sentence

A prolific shoplifter has been sentenced to jail after repeatedly targeting the same Co-op store in Bestwood, Nottingham. Patrick Butler, 43, stole thousands of pounds worth of goods over a six-month period, making a total of 27 thefts from the same location.

    Persistent Theft

Between December and the beginning of this month, Butler was caught on CCTV returning multiple times in one day, filling a bag with items, and leaving without paying. His consistent thefts tormented the staff at the Co-op on Beckhampton Road, causing significant distress and financial loss.

Initially charged with six thefts, Butler failed to appear in court and went on to commit 21 additional thefts from the same store. His persistent stealing spree eventually led to a 12-month jail sentence and a criminal behavior order that bans him from the store for two years.Man who stole from same shop 27 times in six months bags jail sentence

    String of Offences

Butler’s thefts began on March 12, when he stole £210 worth of stock. He continued his crime spree by stealing cheese and laundry products on March 23. Between March 24 and May 2, he targeted the store eight more times.

On May 4, Butler made three separate trips to the Co-op, stealing items each time. He returned twice on May 12 and twice the following day, continuing his pattern of theft. In total, Butler stole almost £1,400 worth of goods and even shoved a staff member during one of his heists.

    Arrest and Sentencing

Despite attempts to evade the police by hiding between thefts, officers arrested Butler at an address in Top Valley, Nottingham, early last week. He was charged with 21 shop thefts and failing to surrender to police.

Butler, of Bestwood Park, Nottingham, admitted to all the offences, including the six initial thefts, at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court. Sergeant Katie Taylor of Nottinghamshire Police’s Bestwood neighbourhood policing team expressed relief at Butler’s sentencing.

“Patrick Butler has been a nuisance to the Bestwood community for some time, particularly those working at the local Co-op. On 27 separate occasions, he entered the shop with the sole intention of stealing,” said Sergeant Taylor. “Despite our officers charging Butler with the first six thefts, he chose to evade court and continued targeting the same store. His audacity was staggering, so we’re pleased to have tracked him down and brought him to justice.”

    Conclusion

Patrick Butler’s audacious thefts and blatant disregard for the law have finally been met with justice. His sentence not only punishes his repeated crimes but also brings some relief to the staff and community he tormented. This case highlights the persistent efforts of local law enforcement to uphold justice and protect the community from repeat offenders
