39-year-old Judith Akoth has achieved her dream of becoming a nurse by graduating with a diploma from the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Siaya.
Her inspiring journey spans two decades, marked by numerous challenges and unwavering perseverance.
Born on October 26, 1984, Judith’s early life was marred by adversity as she lost both her parents at the tender age of ten, leaving her under the care of her maternal grandparents.
Despite these hardships, she displayed exceptional academic promise, ranking as the 3rd best student in her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam in 1998.
Reports indicate that she also ranked as the top student in her school and region during that time.
Financial constraints forced Judith to attend multiple day schools, but her determination was unwavering.
She went on to complete her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2002, achieving a respectable B-.
This was a significant achievement given her challenging circumstances.
However, as Judith embarked on her journey to college, life took an unexpected turn.
Her grandmother, who had been caring for her, passed away after being diagnosed with diabetes, compelling Judith into an early marriage at the age of 18.
Seventeen years later, a glimmer of hope emerged as Judith found herself nursing her sick aunt.
During this challenging period, a chance encounter with a peasant farmer changed the course of her life.
This farmer saw something special in Judith and envisioned her success as a nurse.
His words ignited a spark of determination and self-belief in Judith.
Encouraged by this encounter, Judith took a leap of faith and enrolled in KMTC Siaya Campus in March 2020.
Her journey was far from easy, with opposition from her family and a significant ankle injury in January of that year.
Just two months away from her final qualifying exams, tragedy struck once more when Judith lost her husband.
This heartbreaking loss left her shattered, and she found herself at the crossroads of despair.
But she refused to give in to the despair and instead chose to confront adversity with unwavering determination.
Recalling the moment she received the devastating news of her husband’s passing while on rural placement, Judith stated, “The world seemed to crumble around me, but I refused to be broken.” Her journey was a testament to the strength of a determined heart.
At the age of 39, Judith proudly holds her diploma, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams.

Her journey, however, does not end here. She stands as an inspiration to many, especially women who have faced similar obstacles and adversity in their pursuits.
Judith’s message to every woman out there is clear: hold onto your dreams, no matter the obstacles.
Let us support and uplift one another, instead of being stumbling blocks. Together, we can reshape societal perceptions about KMTC and achieve transformative change by upholding morality and doing what is right.
In a world filled with challenges and adversity, Judith Akoth’s story is a beacon of hope, illustrating the power of resilience and unwavering determination.
Her journey serves as an inspiration for those who face obstacles in their pursuit of their dreams.
As she takes her place in the healthcare profession, Judith’s story is a reminder that with perseverance, age, and circumstances should never deter us from reaching our goals.
