Former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) vice chairperson Kipruto Kirwa has divulged why he ditched camp to the Azimio-One Kenya coalition.
The lack of democracy within UDA’s National Executive Council (NEC), according to Kirwa, is the reason he left the William Ruto-led camp.
Kirwa also revealed that he was sidelined in the council and was not involved in the party’s decision-making during an interview with the Standard.
“I left the party because my conscience and principles could not have allowed me to continue when it appeared I was not needed,” he told The Standard.
The 62-year-old revealed that his breaking point was the selection of Rigathi Gachagua as DP Ruto’s running mate.
Kirwa says that opinion polls were in favor of Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, with only 3 MPs voting for Gachagua against 27 who voted for Kindiki in what he terms as an imbalance of democracy.
The former agriculture minister, now in Azimio, says he is content with his decision as he is working with leaders that he has collaborated with in the past.
“The team I worked with during President Kibaki’s firstterm among them Karua and Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi are all there making me feel at home,” said Kirwa.
