The United States government broke records with its donation of Ksh23 billion (USD 194.5 million) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to aid Kenyans affected by the country’s ongoing drought and subsequent food crisis.

U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provided the donation on behalf of the United States government to help alleviate drought and aid people affected by conflicts, according to a statement released by WFP on September 23
The World Food Programme’s (WFP) greatest single donation to its Kenyan operation will also go toward aiding the country’s refugee population.
Lauren Landis, WFP’ s Country Director in Kenya, said, ” We are incredibly thankful for this unprecedented donation from the US Government to support thousands of people affected by severe drought and those driven from their homes by conflict.

WFP indicated that the monies will be utilised in delivering food and monetary support to 535,000 individuals facing emergency levels of hunger and aid in malnutrition eradication
Moreover, the money will be put toward initiatives to help people diversify their sources of income, such as beekeeping, as well as repair and refurbish irrigation systems
“There is still no end in sight to this drought disaster, and we appeal on all donors to secure predictable and sustainable financing through this year and far into 2023 to save lives and stop more people from sinking into deeper depths of famine,” Landis continued
This gift follows President William Ruto’ s recent plea to world leaders for cooperation in combating climate change
Developing countries’ millions of working people are an untapped resource, according to Ruto, who says they may boost growth and contribute to a more equitable global order
” We cannot afford to squander another moment arguing the advantages of doing something vis a vis doing nothing, ” he remarked
” 3. 1 million people are facing severe drought. No longer must nations do this on individually. It’ s evolving into a global problem, ” Added Ruto.
