The previously blossoming relationship between President William Ruto and his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, has soured due to differences on various issues.
This change in dynamics has left the Mount Kenya region unsettled, as uncertainty looms over Gachagua’s future as Deputy President. Meanwhile, the Western region appears to be gaining political ground.
Juja MP George Koimburi shed light on this situation, explaining that Gachagua is making efforts to unite the Mount Kenya region behind him and is seeking to engage with Uhuru Kenyatta to strengthen their collective bargaining power within the government.
Koimburi acknowledged Gachagua’s representation of the region in government but mentioned some issues, including concerns about fund allocation for water and road projects.
To secure their political position, Koimburi emphasized the need for an extensive mass voter registration campaign.
He highlighted the risk of losing the Deputy Presidency by 2027 if they fail to mobilize enough support, alluding to potential schemes by counterparts from the Western region.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga characterized the recent Cabinet reshuffle as a political maneuver and noted that the Western region had gained more from it.
Kahiga urged government appointees to stand behind Deputy President Gachagua, the region’s leader with a guaranteed tenure.
He stressed the importance of supporting the Deputy President, who was elected alongside President Ruto, while also pledging continued support for the President, all while monitoring unfolding developments.
