Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s lawsuit challenging his impeachment and replacement by current governor Anne Kananu was dismissed by the Appellate Court on Friday, March 4.
Judges Nambuye, Okwengu, and Laibuta made the decision that Sonko’s impeachment was lawful and procedurally fair, and that neither the County Assembly nor the Senate were at fault.
“Accordingly, we reach the inescapable conclusion that the charges levelled against Hon Sonko were substantiated and proved to the required standard and that the County Assembly and the Senate could not be faulted for impeaching him,” part of the ruling read.
The three judges concluded that there was enough evidence to convict Sonko of violating the Constitution while serving as Nairobi governor, and that he should be removed from office.
In December 2020, Sonko was impeached.
