Raila Meets Presidents Kiir, Museveni Over South Sudan Crisis
Kenya’s Special Envoy to South Sudan Raila Odinga on Friday flew to Juba for a meeting with President Salva Kiir over the current crisis in the country following the house arrest of Vice President Riek Machar on Wednesday.
Mr. Odinga was appointed to the role by President William Ruto, who chairs the East African Community (EAC) bloc.
After meeting Kiir, Raila expressed confidence that the crisis in South Sudan would be resolved amicably and revealed in a statement he was encouraged by the possibility of a resolution to the conflict.
“I will be briefing other regional leaders and President William Ruto on my mission and a possible roadmap to sustainable peace and stability,” he stated.
He then flew to Entebbe, Uganda State House, where he held another meeting with President Yoweri Museveni, whose country already has deployed troops to South Sudan.
“Landed in Entebbe, Uganda for a briefing session with President Yoweri Museveni following my factfinding mission on the political situation in South Sudan. I remain hopeful that a peaceful way out of the political uncertainty in South Sudan is possible, and further escalation can be avoided,” Raila said in a statement that he posted on X.
