NTV Anchor Mark Masai Takes a Bold Step Moments After Being Fired.
You may be knocked down, but you’ re not out! So thinks Mark Masai, the NTV news anchor let go by Nation Media Group yesterday. The prime time news presenter and talk show host announced his dismissal from Nation and subsequent return home mere minutes after the news broke.

Masai, who had worked for NMG for 14 years, was a friendly journalist with a strong character. As the company reorganizes to deal with declining profits, he is among the journalists let go.
His departure will leave a void at NTV and cause tension between him and Smriti Vidyarthi, with whom he had developed a warm rapport on air. It would not be surprising to see Mark Masai join another TV station in the next few weeks, especially given the scarcity of top talent in the industry and the difficulty of locating an ethical journalist.

A number of NTV journalists have been sent packing, though the network hasn’ t revealed who they are. It is common practice to use NMG as a proxy for the health of Kenya’ s media market because of the company’ s prominence in both the country’ s media landscape and its financial standing.
The newspaper division, which produces the Daily Nation and other newspapers for the company, took the biggest hit. Several journalists and editors have already received their termination notices.

The Nation’ s CEO, Stephen Gitagama, has stated that the layoff, as painful as it may be, is necessary in order to construct the NMG of the future, which relies more heavily on technology and is adaptable enough to survive the changing media consumption and income trends.
